St Patrick - Patron Saint of Ireland!

The word 'patron' means protector. Patron is also used to describe someone who has a close relationship with another person, or who acts as an intermediary between two parties. It can also be used to describe someone who has been given a special status or right by the state or a corporation. Patronage is often the result of an official position in government, and is usually reserved for people of high social standing.

The patron saint of Ireland is St Patrick. St Patrick was born in Britain in about 390 AD. He was kidnapped as a child and taken to Ireland, where he spent the next twenty years. St Patrick then returned to Britain, but died in 461 AD.

St Patrick's Day is celebrated in Ireland on 17th March. This date was chosen because it was the first Sunday after Easter, which falls on the 14th of March each year. In Ireland, this is called 'Lá Fhéile Pádraig' (Irish for 'St Patrick's Day').

Traditionally, this was a religious festival, celebrated by people who were baptised in the Christian faith. In recent times, however, it has become an important national holiday. It is now celebrated by Irish people of all faiths, including atheists and agnostics.

In the early years, the celebration of St Patrick's Day involved people wearing green clothing and eating shamrock. Shamrocks are a type of clover that grows wild in Ireland. They are also known as 'St Patrick's crosier'. The shamrock is still used today to symbolise the holy trinity, which consists of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Today, St Patrick's Day is celebrated with parades, music, dancing, drinking and feasting. In some places, there are also sporting events and cultural festivals. In Dublin, there is even a St Patrick's Day parade that takes place on the streets of the city.

Ireland has a rich history and culture. For centuries, the Irish have lived in isolation from the rest of the world. As a result, their language, culture and traditions have remained largely unchanged. These traditions are still celebrated today.
