Why is screen printing so expensive?

Screen printing is expensive only if you run a small order of shirts. The setup process is quite tedious and hence the cost.

However once the screens are setup up printing large quantities are very cost effective.

Orders of 20 can be printed however the cost per shirt is still significantly higher than if you printed 100 shirts.

So if you wondering how can you print shirts cheap with screen printing I suggest you run at least 50 shirts at a time.

How do you design or prepare an image for screen printing T shirts?

How Do You Create Screen Printing For Different Sizes?

When you have two different sizes such as adult and children sizes it is easier to have two separate screens to create the design. Sometimes using the same screen may not have the best effect on the final finish design.

What are the different steps to screen printing?

Here are the steps to do screen printing shirts:

Step 1: Creating the Screen Printing Frames
Take your size from the image you plan to print. Leave a few inches around the image for buffer so you have enough room to work with. This should give you enough room to work with the images on the frames later and still have room to tape off the sides to prevent bleed through. You can construct the frames out of wood.

Step 2: Attaching The Frames
Attach the screen fabric to the frame with a staple gun. Get someone to help you make the fabric taut.

Step 3: Preparing the Photo Emulsion
When mixing the colors use gloves as the paint can be toxic to the skin. Have drop cloths to help with spills. This is the messy part. Apply 2 or 3 smooth coatings to the frame and then allow to dry.

Make the frame to screen print your design

Step 4: Setup exposure Lighting
The heat from the lighting can help to dry the screens faster.

Step 5: Creating Transparency Masks
You will need to create transparencies by printing the designs on these. This will then help you to transfer the image to the screen.

Step 6: Curing the Emulsion
After the photo emulsion has dried onto the frame in a dark place - expose them to set the image on the screen. Place the screens under exposure rig and carefully centered and aligned the transparencies on the frames. Remember to place them backwards as this side of the frame will be next to the fabric when printing. Curing takes little over an hour.

Apply the paint to the screen

Step 7: Washing Out the Frames
After the curing time has passed, you should see a color variation on the screen. The lighter shade is where the emulsion was blocked by the transparency print and did not cure. You can wash out these lighter areas with cool water. It will take a few minutes to the areas clear. It is best to use the spray nozzle from your sink to force out the uncured emulsion.

Smaller detail areas may require a fine bristled brush or an old toothbrush to clear it away. Be careful on the small areas to make sure you don't scrub away cured material. Check your screen by looking through it towards a light source to make sure the image areas are clear and your edges are clean and clear.

Step 8: Taping the Frame
Once the screen is ready, there is one more step before printing. Please wrap the entire frame in duct tape to stop ink seeping through any gaps onto your T-shirt.

Step 9: Print Your Shirts!
The next step is place a board or sheet between the layers of the shirt so that ink doesnt seep through and stain the other side.Simply align the screen on the shirt and place some ink across the screen above your image.

Using your squeegee, gently "butter" the ink across the image area the screen but do not press down on it yet. Once the image is covered, use your squeegee to scrape down the ink across the image as your "print" stroke. Re-position and repeat if your image is larger than your squeegee, as it was in my case.

You can make additional strokes if you want to apply the ink thicker.

History of Screen Printing

You may wonder who invested screen printing? Screen printing is the original printing technique and dates back to Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) in China. The Chinese back in 960 AD found a way to transfer designs onto fabrics.

Then it was the Japanese who started make recognizable forms of screen printing. A type of stencil design is first created on a fine mesh or polyester fabric.

In the old days the stencils created by the Japanese were of paper and mesh (woven from human hair). Then several layers of ink gets pushed through this stencil layout onto the print material of the apparel.

Each ink color has its own stencil to come up with the final finish products (the printed shirts). Any area of the shirt that does not need to be printed is covered with an impermeable substance to prevent ink contamination.

In the 18th Century this art form made is way into Europe and became widely accepted especially in France. In the early 1900s, squeegees were formed and used as a way of pulling ink through the screen mesh.

Roy Beck, Charles Peter and Edward Owens are credited with revolutionizing the commercial screen printing industry by their introduction of photo-imaged stencils to screenprinting.

In 1960 Michael Vasilantone, an American entrepreneur created and developed the first multi-color garment screen printing machine that was rotatable. His patent started the boom in screen printing on T-shirts.

Another popular form of screen printing which we also use here is the CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black ‘key’) method. It is widely known as graphic screen printing and is used for making larger prints.
