SCREEN PRINTING CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Screen Printing Care Instructions: How to Look After Screen Printed Garments

Screen printed garments are durable, but proper care is essential to maintain the quality of both the print and the fabric. Following these care instructions will help prevent cracking, fading, and premature wear.

Before Washing

  • Allow the garment to rest for 24–48 hours after printing.
  • This allows the ink to fully cure and bond with the fabric.
  • Avoid washing or drying during this period.

Washing Instructions

For best results:

  • Turn the garment inside out
  • Wash in cold water
  • Use a gentle or normal wash cycle
  • Wash with similar colours
  • Use mild detergent

Avoid:

  • Bleach or strong detergents
  • Fabric softeners
  • Hot water washes

Drying Instructions

Recommended:

  • Air dry whenever possible
  • Hang dry inside out

If using a dryer:

  • Use low heat
  • Remove promptly once dry

Avoid:

  • High heat drying
  • Over-drying garments

High heat is the most common cause of screen print cracking.

Ironing Instructions

If ironing is required:

  • Turn the garment inside out.
  • Use low heat.
  • Do not iron directly over the printed area.

If needed, place a cloth or baking paper between the iron and the print.

What to Avoid

To preserve screen printed designs, avoid:

  • Dry cleaning
  • High heat washing or drying
  • Excessive stretching of the printed area
  • Abrasive washing with rough garments

Expected Durability

With proper care:

  • Screen prints can last for many years
  • Colours remain vibrant
  • Cracking and peeling are minimised

Improper care may result in fading, cracking, or print damage.

Why Screen Printing Care Matters

Screen printing uses ink bonded directly to fabric. Heat, harsh chemicals, and friction can weaken this bond over time. Following care instructions helps ensure long-lasting results.
